What makes a mushroom functional?

The term ‘functional’ when related to mushrooms is colloquial and is typically used to indicate that the mushroom is both edible and considered to have beneficial health properties. In fact, most mushrooms are functional to a certain extent, even the common ones in the grocery store. Portabella and button mushrooms have been shown to contain beta-glucans and other bio-active compounds, just in much lower concentrations than the varities that are typically placed in the ‘functional mushroom’ category.

What is a tincture?

By definition, a tincture is an extract that contains over 20% alcohol. Our tinctures contain between 25-35% alcohol. This ensures that our products have a long shelf life (most tinctures are shelf stable for several years) and that about a third of the product is comprised of the components that are only soluble in alcohol.

What is a decoction?

A decoction is created by using water as an extraction medium. Certain bioactive compounds in mushrooms and herbs (like beta glucans) can only be extracted through a long process using the correct water temperature. Too much heat and the desirable components are damaged, too little heat and the extraction won’t be complete.

What is an adaptogen?

Adaptogens assist the body in fighting against any type of mental or physical difficulty. They also work to regulate systems of the body that have become unbalanced.

What is a nootropic?

A nootropic is a substance that may improve cognitive function and brain performance. We often hear them called the adaptogens of the neurological system.

How long before I notice any positive changes from adding mushroom or herbal supplements to my diet?

In all honesty, it varies by individual. Most people notice a positive change within the first couple of weeks. We have had customers notice benefits in the first few days and some who didn’t see positive changes for the first month. Others didn’t notice a benefit until they stopped taking them and their symptoms returned. Most dietary supplements require a full 90 days of consistent use to see significant improvement. We recommend that you be consistent, patient, and self-aware.

How do I take tinctures?

Tinctures can be added to water, juice, smoothies, and food. Many prefer to take them in a few ounces of water, simply because it’s an easy and convenient method. Experiment and find the best approach for you! There is more information available on our How to Get Started with Mushroom Tinctures page.

Can I take more than one tincture at the same time?

Yes! We recommend starting with one single tincture, like Druzy Fusion’s The Foundation blended mushroom tincture for one week to measure your body’s response. We recommend adding one additional tincture at a time to provide additional support where needed. There is more information available on our How to Get Started with Mushroom Tinctures page.

Are your tinctures grain free?

Yes! Although we do grow our mycelium (the root structure of the mushroom) on whole grain, this grain does not become incorporated into the product.

Are your tinctures gluten free?

Yes! Our mycelium (the root structure of the mushroom) is grown on whole oat grain, this grain does not become incorporated into the product.

Are your tinctures vegan?

Yes! Our tinctures contain no animal ingredients or by-products.

How much alcohol is in your tinctures?

Our tinctures contain 25-35% alcohol.

Why is alcohol in your tinctures?

Alcohol has traditionally been used in nutraceutical supplements as an extraction medium. Many functional mushrooms contain bioactive compounds that are best extracted with alcohol.

Some researchers have shown evidence that only the woody mushrooms like reishi and turkey tail contain alcohol soluble beneficial compounds. However, we know that not all of the active compounds in mushrooms are identified or understood.  Also, there is much further research required before we understand how exactly these compounds work together to promote the health benefits that they demonstrate. Evidence of an entourage effect between some of the mushroom compounds does exist.

After much research, we believe that taking the approach of a whole fruiting body extract, using organic cane alcohol, water, heat and pressure has the best potential to obtain all the benefits. Alcohol also acts as a preservative, which gives our products an extended shelf life.

What if I can't have alcohol?

Many people can't have alcohol in their diets for personal or health reasons.  Fortunately, there is a simple way to remove the alcohol from tinctures.

Place your tincture dose in a mug and add two to three ounces of boiling water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. The alcohol will evaporate as the water cools.

How should my tinctures be stored?

Store your tinctures in at room temperature in a dry location out of direct sunlight.

Can I give mushroom or herbal tinctures to my pets?

Many people do give mushroom supplements to their pets, but we recommend you consult a veterinarian before you decide to do this. We also recommend you follow the instructions included in the What if I can't have alcohol FAQ prior to giving tinctures to animals.

Can children take mushroom or herbal tinctures?

Please consult your pediatrician before supplying herbal tinctures to children under 16.
